Academic Council
Academic Council is a College committee
which makes recommendations on academic activities like curriculum,
policies or other issues to the Board of Governors. Examples of the
types of recommendations Academic Council would make to the Board are
admission standards for programs, withdrawal date policies or the issues
concerning Mount Royal eventually evolving into a university. According
the MRC Academic Council Constitution, the purpose of Council is to
provide “a forum for dialogue where College constituents explore ideas
and concepts leading to the development of academic policies and
procedures.”
Academic Council is comprised of three constituencies: students,
faculty and administration. Each constituency selects, by election
or appointment, the members that will represent it on Academic
Council and its standing committee(s). Each constituency on
Academic Council has a maximum of ten members for a total of
thirty councillors at full capacity. The Academic Council of Mount
Royal College is established in accordance with section 46 and 47 of the
Province of Alberta Colleges Act:
S.A. 2003,
Chapter P-19:
[Proclaimed in force March 18, 2004].
To comply with AUCC regulations, our College governance structure will
be moving towards a bi-cameral model. This means that Board of Governors
will make resource related decisions and Academic Council will make
academic related decisions. Currently, the board approves all decisions,
while Academic Council acts as a recommending body to the BOG.
Some of the membership of AC may be changing in the future but we are
still unclear as to what the overall look of Council will look like. We
do know that the number of Councilors will be increasing to a number
closer to 50 then 30. This is similar to the model that most
Universities use.
