Students’ Council is
collectively the highest decision-making body of SAMRC. Students’
Council is a policy-making Board of Directors for the Students’
Association of Mount Royal College. As such, all Students’
Councillors have a clearly defined governance role that focuses on
the organization as a whole.
Students’ Council has
18 seats. All Students’ Councillors, regardless of seat, are
entitled to a single vote at Students’ Council meetings.
Composition of
Students' Council
Each seat on Students’
Council belongs to one of four areas:
1. Students
representing each of the faculties of study at Mount Royal
College:
-
Arts
-
Business and
Entrepreneurial Studies
-
Communication
Studies
-
Conservatory and
Continuing Education
-
Health and Community
Studies
-
Science and
Technology
Students in these
positions bring perspective to Students’ Council on the student
issues facing constituents in each of the faculties.
2. Students
representing areas of diversity:
-
Immigrant,
International and Visible Minority Students’ Representative
-
Native, Aboriginal
and First Nations Students’ Representative
-
Students with
Disabilities’ Representative
-
Women Students’
Representative
Students in these
positions represent constituents whose issues are identified in
the Government of Canada’s Ministry of Heritage as traditionally
facing under-representation. As such, Students’ Councillors
holding these positions ensure that student issues for these
groups of constituents are heard.
3. Students
assisting the Executive Committee in their work:
Students in these
positions are appointed annually early in the Fall semester
through the SAMRC Students’ Council appointment process. These
students do not represent or bring perspective from a particular
constituency. Rather, they have a mandate to support the Executive
Committee their work.
4. Students on the
Executive Committee:
These students are
elected annually during the Winter semester. Students in these
positions are elected to carry out the administrative and executive functions of Mount
Royal College’s student government. These are full- time, salaried
positions. Students who run for an Executive position must be
enrolled full-time, as recognized by the Registrar, in credit
courses, and if elected, must drop to part-time studies during
their term in office.
Election/Appointment
Students’ Councillors
from areas 1 and 2 are elected each Winter semester and appointed
at other times during the year in the case of a vacancy. Those
from area 3 are appointed annually in the Fall semester. Those
from area 4 (Executives) are elected in the Winter semester;
please refer to the by-laws for information on vacancies in this
area.
