ELECTION PLATFORM:

If elected VP Academic, I will strive to uphold the SA’s mandate of providing LEADERSHIP, EMPOWERMENT, and ADVOCACY to all Mount Royal students.

As a member of the SA Executive Committee, VP Academic provides LEADERSHIP to the college community primarily as part of a team. There must be common goals, effective communication and mutual respect among the members of a team in order for them to fulfill their duties as leaders. Contributing to such an environment on the next SA Executive is a privilege and a challenge I welcome.

VP Academic is also responsible for providing leadership among the student volunteers who sit on Academic Council, Students’ Council and Appeals and grievance Committees. These positions require individuals with an abundance of enthusiasm, commitment to their fellow students and a strong work ethic. As VP Academic, I will provide LEADERSHIP by example, striving to demonstrate similar attributes in my own responsibilities and professional relationships.

Knowledge is power. As VP Academic, I vow to EMPOWER the students of Mount Royal by making them aware of the changes in policy that directly affect them. All students should be informed of their rights to appeal a grade, file a grievance or be protected from discrimination. They should be aware of new policies concerning grading, plagiarism or program changes. Open communication with the student body, frequent information sessions and ready access to by-laws, policies and acts are ways in which I will endeavour to EMPOWER the students of Mount Royal.

As an elected and paid representative, it is the VP Academic’s responsibility to ADVOCATE the issues, concerns and ideas of students. I feel the VP Academic should have an open door policy and invite all student concerns and ideas to be brought forward so they may be introduced to the Academic Council agenda. It is at Academic Council that many "hot" and contentious issues are brought forward, including those surrounding plagiarism, on-line learning and changes to the grading system. Not only do students have an equal voice on Academic Council, it is a voice that is heard, as Academic Council makes recommendations directly to the Board of Governors.

Of great concern to me is the recognition of our degrees at graduate and law schools. Alberta universities, in particular, are slow to accept the applied degrees we receive at Mount Royal. As well, government views research as an endeavour for universities only and has so far failed to recognize the research potential of applied degree-granting institutions like Mount Royal College. With Mount Royal’s continued expansion, we must aim to find our rightful place among Alberta’s post-secondary institutions. It would be my honour, as your VP Academic, to LEAD, EMPOWER and ADVOCATE on behalf of the students of Mount Royal College towards that goal.
