March is Native Awareness Month!

Native Awareness Month

March is Native Awareness Month here at SAMRU – and we’re looking forward to a month packed with activity!
You don’t need to be a student with an aboriginal heritage to get involved either – everyone is welcome at the different events happening to celebrate Native Awareness Month – from movies to concerts to readings and demonstrations, this is a great opportunity to explore your own heritage, share it with others, or learn about local culture.
March is also jam-packed with other events from the Sustainability Centre weekly workshops to club events and also the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. March 8th is the deadline for both E-Awards and the SAMMIES video contest, and make sure to check out XXX Hypnotist Tony Lee at the end of the month. Keep reading for all the details and even more information about stuff you just shouldn’t miss!

E-Award deadline extended!

If you haven’t already applied for an E-Award, or nominated a staff or faculty member who has made a positive difference, the deadline has been extended – so there’s even more time to do so!
The application and nomination deadline is now March 8th – so head on up to the Wyckham House reception on the 2nd floor, or visit http://www.samrc.com/studentOpportunities/awardsBursaries.htm for the complete booklet, along with the forms. There are awards for lifelong learners, advocates for a greener planet, athletes and more!

FREE Movie Mondays

Movies that matter explore important topics themed monthly. These movies are always free to attend, and are held from 4-6pm in the Art Gallery on the second floor of Wyckham House. Upcoming movies include:

Mar 1, 2010

The Business of Fancydancing (fic)
Seymour Polatkin is a successful, gay Indian poet from Spokane who confronts his past when he returns to his childhood home on the reservation to attend the funeral of a dear friend.
  Mar 8, 2010

Rabbit Proof Fence (fic/based on true story)
The title refers to a 1,500-mile fence separating outback desert from the farmlands of Western Australia. It is here, in 1931, that three aboriginal girls are separated from their mothers and transported to a distant training school, where they are prepared for assimilation into white society by a racist government policy. Gracie, Daisy, and Molly belong to Australia’s "stolen generations," and this riveting film (based on the book by Molly’s daughter, Doris Pilkington Garimara) follows their escape and tenacious journey homeward, while a stubborn policy enforcer demands their recapture
  Mar 15, 2010

Pow-wow Highway (fic)
For the Northern Cheyenne tribe of Lame Deer, Montana, the American Dream has taken a grim detour. Here, Buddy Red Bow is a committed activist battling a suspicious land-grab. Philbert Bono is a serene spiritual warrior guided by sacred visions. But when Buddy’s estranged sister is framed and jailed in New Mexico, the two men take Philbert’s rust-wrecked ’64 Buick ‘war pony’ on a road trip that makes some very unexpected stops along the way.

Mar 22, 2010

Hank Williams First Nation (fic)
Set in a quiet rural Native Athabascan community in northern Alberta, seventy-five-year-old Martin Fox decides to make a pilgrimage to Nashville to visit the grave of his hero, Hank Williams. Together with his 17-year-old great-nephew, the two board a Tennessee-bound Greyhound in search of the truth about Hank. As the two travelers’ misadventures gain story-of-the-week status in the American press, the news trickling back home unifies the little community, and highlights the dramas of the people who stayed at home.

  Mar 29, 2010

Johnny Greyeyes (fic)
The powerful story of a native american woman struggling to maintain strength love and spirit. Since the shooting death of her father Johnny has spent most of her life in prison. There she forms a new family and falls in love with her cellmate Lana.

These movies are always free to attend, and are held from 4-6pm in the Art Gallery on the second floor of Wyckham House. For more Free Movie Mondays visit our Movies page >>

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

by Feiven G – Cultural Mosaic Centre volunteer

On March 21st 1960, a large group of students took to the streets to peacefully protest against the apartheid laws of the South African government. Tragically, the students fighting for equal rights were gunned down by police in what is now known as the Sharpeville Massacre. The uproar was great and results significant, as it shone an internationally visible spotlight on inequality. Women, men and children all stood up for their rights against racial injustice, and we now recognize this day as The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
In many situations, locations, and facets of our lives, many of us experience racism and/or discrimination in one form or another. What we don’t always realize, is how often we are either inadvertently or direct witnesses to it too. It baffles me to hear a Caucasian man or woman (especially professors) tell me racism hardly exists in Canada like it does in the U.S., when they haven’t been subjected to my experiences, let alone of a new immigrant to the country. Racism has somewhat become the new “n” word, but the truth is when we try to ignore it, we give it power to continue, and Canada’s institutionalized racism makes many people unknowing participants.
As students here at Mount Royal University, we are the next generation to take the lead and stand up for our beliefs. If you witness an injustice, speak up. If you are subject to it, speak up. Speak up. You can make a difference.
