Jonathan Macpherson is in
his second term as SAMRC president and is very grateful
to have another opportunity to represent Mount Royal
students for another year.
When a
promising football career was cut short due to a blown
knee, Jonathan knew that he could take the passion that
he had for solidarity, enthusiasm and hard work, and
transfer it to the academic realm. As one of the
youngest presidents in the history of the Students’
Association, Jonathan knows that he still has a lot to
learn but he enjoys the challenge. A 4th year political
science student, Jonathan hopes to finish his Honours BA
at the University of Victoria, before heading off to law
school. Going into his 5th year at Mount Royal College
Jonathan certainly knows many of the issues facing the
students of Mount Royal, and the greater Calgary student
community.
In his
first year Jonathan was able to create and implement a
free breakfast program for students in the Peer Support
Centre, a program that is the first of its kind in all
of Canada. Jonathan has also worked hard with the
Executive Committee to ensure that the new Mount Royal
degrees are accessible, affordable, and transferable for
all students. In addition, Jonathan continues to work
with the SAMRC staff and Students’ Council on the
expansion of Wyckham House student centre — a project
that students, staff and former SAMRC student leaders
have dreamed about for over a decade. This new
development will almost double the size of our student
centre!
With
the welfare of current students foremost in his mind,
Jonathan still has a burning passion to do more.
Jonathan understands that the unprecedented growth in
Calgary has created a housing crisis — one that has an
acute effect on students who already have to deal with
high tuition fees, the cost of books, inflation and
working to get through school. One of Jonathan’s
initiatives this year is to lobby all levels of
government and the College to implement solutions for
affordable housing in Calgary and help ease the student
burden.
As
president and executive manager, Jonathan has both a
strong internal focus that involves sitting on numerous
college committees and the College Leadership Group,
along with a strong external focus that sees him
participating in both provincial and federal lobby
groups that collectively represent nearly a half a
million students.
Jonathan is committed to working hard to benefit
students, and his door is always open. Feel free to give
him a call or e-mail him (see contact information
above), or just come up to the second floor of Wyckham
house and pay him a visit.
When
Jonathan is not working he enjoys playing sports,
traveling and spending quality time with his beautiful
wife Aimee. Jonathan |
