Peer Support Centre

The Peer Support (PSC) opened in 1993 to provide confidential peer support. The centre is open to all MRC students and provides emergency student loans, a Calgary Inter-Faith food bank depot, campus and city information, and a free legal clinic in addition to confidential peer support. The centre is operated by MRC student volunteers.

What is a PSC volunteer?
Peer Support Centre volunteers are people like you – students, parents, friends. They are all dedicated to helping other students get the most out of their Mount Royal experience. All PSC volunteers are trained in respectful communication, empathetic listening, and referrals, and they are all bound by a strict code of confidentiality.
Being a PSC volunteer means that you will meet a wide variety of active, involved individuals, you’ll have many challenging and rewarding experiences, and you’ll develop a powerful skill set to help you in today’s career market. Volunteers provide an empathetic ear, experienced referrals, and respectful encouragement. You’ll be trained to provide appropriate and empowering support for students facing emotional, financial, academic and legal challenges.

Why be a PSC Volunteer?

  • You’ll receive ongoing professional development that will develop crucial career skills in communication, conflict resolution, and many other areas
  • You’ll have the rewarding experience of making a difference in the lives of people just like you
  • You’ll develop a variety of connections, friendly and professional, that will last long past your time with the PSC
  • You’ll have access all the opportunities and rewards available to SAMRC volunteers, including the chance to feel strongly supported yourself
  • Many academic programs value the experience and skills you’ll develop as a PSC volunteer
  • You’ll have tons of fun!

Some of our Services

Peer Support and Referral
If you need to talk to somebody who understands the issues you’re facing, student volunteers are available daily to provide confidential support and experienced referrals to services on campus and throughout the city.

Free Breakfast

Healthy and portable breakfast from 9-10 a.m., Monday to Friday. Breakfast is brain food, so if your cupboards are empty, drop in and grab a bite before class.

Emergency Student Loans

Emergency student loans are available to all eligible MRC students. These interest-free loans provide short-term financial assistance, and must be repaid within 30 days.

Food Bank

The PSC is a depot of the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank, and hampers are available to all eligible individuals. The PSC also has an independent food bank supply that students can access while waiting for their hamper to arrive. Food donations are always welcome.

Free Legal Clinic

The PSC hosts a monthly clinic in partnership with Calgary Legal Guidance. Free 30-minute legal advice sessions are available to MRC students. To book a session in advance, or to find out when the next Legal Clinic will be held, please call 440-6269.

Good Food Box

This program is offered in partnership with Community Kitchens, and offers fresh produce at a fraction of the cost in stores. For details on the Good Food Box program, please call 440-6269.

Textbooks for Free

The PSC has a supply of free textbooks (that’s right, free). Drop in and see if what you need is on our shelves.
