Free Breakfast

Our mothers were right when they told us breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it’s even more so for students. Adequate brain function depends on an infusion of nutrients within the first hour of rising. Unfortunately, most students either skip or simply can’t afford a nutritious breakfast every day.

The Peer Support Centre of SAMRU provides a free, nutritious portable breakfast to students who need it, to help kick start their day. 8:45-10 a.m. Monday through Friday during the fall and winter semesters. Fresh fruit, toast & jam, yogurt, and coffee or tea provide a simple and healthy daily foundation that makes learning possible all day long.

The program began as an initiative of a past SAMRU president, and has become one of our most in-demand programs. In the 2009/2010 school year we served 8,200 free breakfasts, and the average number of students using the service went from 71 people per day in September to 87 people per day in March. We’ve heard from lots of those students that there are many days where this is the best meal they can afford to eat all day, which certainly makes this one of our most important initiatives.

If you would like more information drop into the Peer Support Centre on the Second Floor Wyckham House, or contact us.

Why Donate?

Whether it’s helping students cope with non-academic crisis (i.e. offering food for their cupboards, emergency student loans, counseling services etc.), or helping our members become more involved in our community (i.e. volunteer opportunities, employment opportunities etc.), we strive to guide our members to exceed their own expectations by having a positive post-secondary experience and we work to set them up for success for the rest of their lives.

You have the power to make a difference today. Your money will go to one of our most important services, providing free, portable and nutritious breakfast to our students who need it, or to one of the many programs we offer our students. You can let us know where you’d like to help out and we can direct your donations accordingly. Tax receipts can be sent out for donations over $20.00 (see below for more information).
